DeepTech, Scaleup Europe Fund, Old Money and 96 New EU Grants

August 26, 2026 • By Stephan Segler, PhD

Here are some updates regarding EU grants and the EIC.

The Old Guard & Its Old Money

Since a new wave of EIC Accelerator interviews is already on the horizon, here is a brief anecdote about a company that took part in the interviews a few years ago.

During the interview, the question of venture capitalists and EIC co-investors came up.

When asked, the CEO mentioned one of the VCs they expected to lead the next round.

To his surprise, the EIC moderator, who shall not be named, called them "new money" and asked for a more established VC.

At that point, the "new money" VC fund had more than €100 million committed and had already made 20 investments.

This stuck with me because the CEO was genuinely upset. Why would an EIC moderator, who was not even a jury member, be so dismissive of a legitimate funding source when the EIC’s entire mission should be to crowd in more investors?

I believe the biggest barriers to funding in Europe lie as much with the bureaucratic leadership’s mentality as with excessive red tape.

I have uploaded new videos and detailed articles on the following topics:

New EU Grants

Since my last news post on Subsdy earlier this month, 96 new grants and tenders have been added to the EU’s funding landscape. It’s always surprising to see how many funding opportunities there are, yet most companies apply for the same few grants, which drives down success rates, while many lesser-known grants are far less competitive.

I have selected 10 interesting opportunities on Subsdy, but here are some examples of the grants added recently:

  • KAVA Call 14 – RIS Innovation: Provides €800K–€1 million per consortium for demonstrating and commercializing raw-materials innovations.

  • Next-Generation QKD Systems: Provides €21–€24 million to one European consortium developing and demonstrating next-generation quantum-secure communication systems.

  • Financial Support to Startups and Scaleups – Shape & Scale: Provides up to €100K for early-stage ventures and €200K–€500K for scaleups in the cultural and creative industries.

  • KAVA Call 14 – Upscaling: Provides €500K–€2.5 million per consortium to upscale and commercialize validated technologies for mining, materials processing, advanced materials, recycling, and the circular economy.

  • Eurostars-3 Call 12: Offers a total budget of approximately €86.4 million for market-oriented international R&D projects led by innovative SMEs.

These tips are not only useful for European startups, professional writers, consultants and Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME) but are generally recommended when writing a business plan or investor documents.

Deadlines: Post-Horizon 2020, the EIC Accelerator accepts Step 1 submissions now while the deadlines for the full applications (Step 2) under Horizon Europe are listed below. The Step 1 applications must be submitted weeks in advance of Step 2. The next EIC Accelerator cut-off for Step 2 (full proposal) can be found here. After Brexit, UK companies can still apply to the EIC Accelerator under Horizon Europe albeit with non-dilutive grant applications only - thereby excluding equity-financing. Switzerland has resumed its participation in Horizon Europe and is now eligible for the EIC Accelerator.
